What is Performance Improvement CME (PI-CME)?
According to the American Medical Association,
Performance Improvement CME (or PI-CME) is the “Core
of the New CME.”
At its highest level, PI-CME is able to assess the impact
of professional education on patient and population
outcomes. Although PI-CME is a conceptually sound approach
for assessing the effectiveness of educational
interventions, it has thus far not been broadly
implemented. Intelligent Medical Decisions, Inc. exists to
fill this gap in continuing education by providing
full-service, objective and independent PI solutions to
medical societies, academic medical centers, managed care
organizations, hospital systems and medical education
providers.
Why is PI-CME Important?
Moore's Levels of Outcomes-based CME Evaluation
Increasing demands to link CME directly to improved
patient outcomes has led to transformational changes in
continuing medical education. Government and media
scrutiny, as well as increased pressure from educational
supporters, has driven educators to find ways to achieve
higher levels of patient outcomes. The ACCME has new
accreditation criteria that mandate physician outcomes
measurements. Commercial supporters are requiring CME
activities to include a performance improvement component.
Maintenance of Certification (MOC), Maintenance of
Licensure (MOL) and Pay for Performance (P4P) initiatives
use performance improvement programs as a standard.
Intelligent Medical Decisions, Inc. understands the
complexities of PI-CME, and can help you develop
educational initiatives that achieve Level 5, 6 and 7
outcomes.
Why Outsource your Performance Improvement
Program?
-
Independent and Objective Outcomes Analysis
To avoid conflicts of interest,
outcomes must be measured by a source independent
of the educational provider. iMD ensures the
integrity of outcomes data while providing
educational partners with the right tools to
improve the quality of education.
-
Experience in Clinical Research Coordination
Unlike traditional CME activities that may last
a few hours, PI-CME initiatives are longitudinal
outcomes studies lasting 6 to 9 months, or more.
iMD conducts PI-CME progams with the same attention
to protocol as a clinical trial, and iMD staff are
experienced in grant development, study design and
management, physician recruitment, training and
followup, statistical analysis and reporting.
-
Integration of Technology
Computers and mobile devices such as smart
phones and PDAs have greatly improved the methods
for conducting outcomes research. Integrating
technology into your outcomes study enhances
accuracy, compliance, and security. Intelligent
Medical Decisions, Inc. focuses on implementing the
latest technology into your performance improvement
initiative to improve adherence, data integrity and
educational effectiveness.
